A nice win which takes us to four wins from five matches with one hanging in the balance. Promotion to the elite Division 1 is an increasing possibility…

Despite having pressure on both wings, Ray uncharacteristically missed a crucial move in the middlegame which cost him the game. This was Ray’s first loss in the London League since 2007 -no mean feat. Perhaps there was a hidden psychological dimension to playing against his old club! Robin’s game soon became symmetrical with really no chances for either side. I agreed a draw despite being the exchange up since it was clearly going to be difficult to convert to a win and we had already won the match. Dan chalked up the first point of the match early on after his opponent missed a fork of king and queen. Why do I never get games like that? Paul and Joe had solid draws. Alan adjourns in a rook and bishop ending with lots of play left but stands better due to his pawns –a win seems likely. Emil, Arnold and Andres all outclassed their opponents –winning with some ease.

Particular thanks to Arnold who stepped in at short notice to cover for Tim who was unwell.

The next London League match is Wednesday 13th January –I’ll contact everyone in the New Year to check availability.

I am away from Friday for a couple of weeks, so a Merry Christmas to everyone but try not to pickle those chess brain cells in ethanol!
