It’s always a pleasure to play at Drunken Knights –nice venue, friendly opponents, Becks on draught and and free corned-beef sandwiches! Everything a growing boy needs.

This was always going to be a difficult match, though. Clearly, we were outgraded all the way down and so the likely final score (6.5 – 3.5) is pretty respectable especially since we didn’t field a full-strength team.

Joe and Bill were the stars of the evening. Bill won a probably drawn rook and pawn ending with a nice tactical trick whilst Joe, playing against a Dutch by transposition, managed to dunk a knight on e6 for most of the game, and survive tactical complications –no small achievement considering his opponent is GM Simon Williams’ girlfriend! Adrian had a nice centre and bishops as white against an Alekhine, and he would appear to be ahead in the ending. My game was interesting for the reason that we were both playing against our respective favourite lines in the Closed Sicilian –perhaps it wasn’t surprising that a  draw was the result.

Currently we are 3rd in the Division, having played 7, won 4, lost 2 with 1 in the balance.
