To all 2nd Team players
Last night's match against Kings Head 4 stands precariously. We're a point behind with two games adjourned. We polished them off in fine style last season so I'm not quite sure what went wrong. It would be great if the two adjourned games could be won but I appreciate that is asking a lot.
Bill was on top board against Brian Jackson, KH4's regular first board but could not make his d4 prevail on this occasion. Sorry to stick you in the firing line Bill. Adrian scored a useful draw on 2 with his (I think) Pirc defence - am I right Adrian? I was fortunate on board 3 to play a substitute when my scheduled opponent did not arrive. The stand-in player had to start 40 minutes behind on the clock and I managed to win, resisting the temptation to move as fast as he did! Tim tried the bold 3...f5 against his opponent's Kings pawn opening but had to concede after a long struggle. Martin went down against an opponent who is playing better than his placing suggests.
So we come to the two adjourned games. Both positions are roughly equal and would appear to be draws in the making. However, I'm grateful to David and Pete for not agreeing draws over the board but holding out for adjournments and the possiblity of winning. David has the exchange but his opponent's two bishops are solid and even dangerous. He will have to proceed with great care to retain a minute advantage. Pete has a passed pawn but it cannot (apparently) be held after which the position will be completely equal and a dead draw. However, I'm sure Pete will have a good look at it and perhaps find a way of harassing his opponent suffinciently to cause an upset in that gentleman's equanimity.
