2nd team - Fri 20 Nov

Morley coll 2 v Battersea 2 20 11 09

Match Report

The Morley College players were not terribly strong on this occasion and were unlucky to meet a team that outgraded them on every board but in my experience you still have to play well to win even when the players are low rated and our team did just that.
Adrian and Simon were merciful on boards 1 and 2 and allowed draws.
Our middle order was outstanding with Bill Drennan returning to play after his American trip and swapping queens in a Pirc. His opponent played alarmingly fast and in the final throes Bill had only 5 mminutes left to his oppoinent's 45. He did not lose his nerve however and clinched the win.
Andy's game in which he replied as black with a Modern defence was equal for a long time but finally there was an error in the endgame and Andy grabbed a bishop. After that his opponent was doomed as all his remaining pawns were on the same colour squares as the extra bishop and their elimination was inevitable. Resignation soon followed.
By his 20th move or so David had a beautiful position with a rook on e7 defended by a pawn on d6 and various pieces dominating all the black diagonals and hovering around the king. His opponent was helpless and finally acknowledged this by resigning.
My own game was solid and a bit dull - yet another draw - not my best effort.
Martin was keen to get home and played like a demon dispatching his opponent in about 20 minutes flat.
Mark on board 8 fought on a rook and a bishop down and darn nearly turned the tables on his opponent, but finally had to admit the inevitable.

Well done everybody - next match is against Willesden/Brent on Thursday 3rd December at Golden Lane, That, if I am not mistaken, is quite soon - only a week and a few days away. I'd be grateful if all 2nd team players receiving this report would let me know at once or sooner whether or not they can play. Thanks.
