Hackney 3 v Battersea 2 Match Report
Thanks to everyone who turned out for Battersea 2 on Wednesday 7th October. We met an on-form Hackney team who managed to beat us despite the two teams being more or less evenly matched. The score stands at 5/1 to Hackney but David and Martin survive to play adjourned positions and it is possible we may end up with a more respectable score line.
Andy was on top board with black and played a Modern Pirc defence. In Andy's own words his opponent 'ground out' the win. Newcomer Nick Ward on 2 played an English but went down to a confident opponent. Sorry to subject you to this baptism of fire Nick. You and I have similar grades but you did beat me on Monday in the only game we've played so I put you above me. On board 3 my French was systematically demolished by a 15 year old who made almost all his moves instantly. I'm sure we will hear more of him. Andreas on 5 with the black pieces outplayed his opponent with a Sicilian - Sheveningen variation. Well done Andreas. Pete could not make his Kings Indian work on this occasion and had to admit defeat after a long struggle. Mark (Somerfield) is another relative newcomer to the club. He had a good game but in his own words relaxed too early after winning material, lost the initiative and suddenly found that it was his opponent that had all the pressure. David and Martin face adjourned positions against a father and son pair. David has an excellent chance of a win against the father. Martin faces a more complicated task against the diminutive son - who looked thoroughly bewildered when Martin handed him the envelope with a sealed move in it at the end of the evening. Martin has rook bishop and knight for the queen. It is a very interesting position. Put it on the website if you can Martin so that everyone can see it:
It may be a theoretical win for the player with the three minor pieces but, as even Fischer said 'a queen is a queen'...
Our next match is on Wednesday 21st October, also at Golden Lane 7.00 pm.
