For everyone there it was extremely tight – but in the end Blair Connell‘s “Blair Project” had the witch sign over everyone else.

The first Battersea Team Rapids event – the first of many we hope – ended with victory for that guy from Surrey and his team made up of Battersea stalwarts Tony Ashby and Steve Barry.

Blair’s lot had been top seeds, but it was not like they had a top Grandmaster like Simon Williams in it like Team Simon.

But Simon – perhaps because he kept on being given beers – suffered two loses, to Battersea’s top two Ali Hill and Adam Bukojemski.

Meanwhile, Blair’s boys put in stellar performances on all three boards ensure they would run out winners.

Going into the final round of five Team Blair and Team Adam had been locked on 24 points each and it was anyone’s game.

But a 3-0 thrashing of Team Rafael, led by Rafa Domenech, led to Blair picking up the three impressive trophies after Adam’s team could only win 2-1.

Blair scored 4/5 on board 1 and there was 3.5/5 from Tony and an unbeaten 3/5 for Steve. In 15 games the Blair Project only lost two games.

However, top performer on the night was undoubtedly Ryan Benguelo, of Team Adam, who hit a stunning 5/5, followed by Boris Stoyanov who racked up 4.5/5.

Special thanks must go to Simon for turning up to captain his team. It was great to have him in the house – thanks Simon!
