Battersea Horses cleared the final hurdle to be crowned champions of the Summer Chess League last night.

Blair Connell’s team of young bucks proved they were well worth a flutter by beating Dulwich Dynamos 3.5-0.5 in the final round two weeks ago to secure the division 1 title.

Yesterday, they were presented with the trophy at the league’s Final Night blitz event by special guest GM David Howell.

Battersea’s other teams had mixed results.

Malcolm Dancy’s Battersea Dogs appeared to have bit off more than they could chew and took several beatings in division 1.

Chris Rebbeck’s The InChessables, a team fielded by Chessable but mainly consisting of Battersea players, scored two wins, two draws and a loss to finish mid-table in division 2.

Meanwhile, Richard Murphy’s The Morphy Richards team did rather better going into the final round with an outside chance of topping division 3 but that title was eventually taken by the Richmond Junior Juggernauts.

But, like the Murphy’s, they weren’t bitter.
