Battersea’s Alexander Cup team kicked off the club’s return to competition in Surrey with a win to sail through to the next round of the historic knockout tournament.

The side, led by Blair Connell, beat Surbiton 5.5-4.5 in a tight match. The match saw a welcome return to action for Duncan Kerr, who won his game, and victory was sealed by Chris Beckett on board 3.

Battersea has won the Alexander Cup seven times in its history, but the last time was in 1952/3. Kingston are the reigning champions.

Blair’s team will now face the winner of Coulsdon vs Wimbledon in the quarter-finals.
