But can he do it on a rainy night in Battersea Chess Club?

It’s Tuesday, November 11, and as the rain pours down outside it’s clear winter is upon us – and the 25/26 chess season is, of course, in full swing.

And so from 6pm, Battersea Labour Club begins to fill up with its chess patrons. Tonight it plays host to Battersea Grand Prix matches and a match between Hammersmith and London Women’s Chess Club.

In particular, I wanted to throw the spotlight on Richard Rawson, new club member who was playing one of his first over-the-board games.

I should add now that Richard is no stranger to chess, having had excellent online experience and is a fearsome blitz player.

But could he do it in a classical game, on a rainy night in Battersea vs Bathuman Madavan?

I won’t spoil the surprise and you can play through the game here, but when the game starts something like this you know there’s going to be fire on the Board…

See below for pictures of the battles that unfolded – all hard fought and well-spirited games.

Here’s to a great season ahead!
