Ali Hill, one of Battersea’s most accomplished players in recent years, has had an excellent tournament at the Open de Portugal in Lisbon this week.

He scored 5.5/9, but what was most impressive was that this was achieved against particularly strong opposition.

He beat GM Antonio Fernandes and two IMs and drew with another IM in  his best tournament so far.

Here is Ali playing next BadaarJobava:

Three of his other opponents were also GMs or IMs. His ELO performance was 2386, well above his rating of 2159, and he is hopeful that this may be enough to secure him his first IM norm.

Three other Battersea players played in the congress – Joe Skielnik only lost once in scoring 4.5/9, Paul Stokes got 4/9 and Vic Rumsey 3/9.
