The first of our new Battersea Variants events starts tomorrow – it’s a crazy variant, and we’ve called it “Idiot King”.

Remember, this is the first of 11 tournaments we’re holding and for each one there’s specially-engraved medals on offer. Doors will open early at 6pm on Tuesday, February 1. To book your spot let Aldo know and turn up on time!

Here’s everything you need to know:

Event 1 – Idiot King

The Brief

All normal chess rules apply. However whenever the King can legally move straight forward a square… it must. Diagonally forward squares do not count.

Format

20 players or less.

5 rounds

Swiss pairing

3 minutes + 2 seconds per move

Please note:

We will do no backtracking. If an illegal move is played but not noticed by the opponent, play should continue. If an illegal move is spotted, allow the opponent to move again. This is a fun event, so it’s good to be nice. However, to avoid unnecessary complications… if an illegal move is played by a player that has less than 30 seconds on the clock, the clock can be stopped and the other player may claim a win.
