Sixty-eight chess players piled into Battersea Chess Club last night for the Battersea FIDE Blitz and it was top seed GM Alexander Cherniaev who came out on top.

The Russian, who plays for Wood Green in the London Chess League, scored a blistering 10/10 to dominate the field and take the £50 first prize.

Mohammed Aayan Ismail finished second with 8.5 and Blair Connell, the highest-placed Battersea player, was third with 8.

Unfortunately, Mohammed had to leave before the prize-giving ceremony. But here he is on Twitter:

The event was put on by tournament director Adam Raoof with John Gordon Bowley acting as deputy arbiter and arbiters Lance Leslie-Smith and Battersea’s Rejean Dupuis.
